As a result, existing medications are not working as well to fight these bacteria. At R&D Boston, AstraZeneca's exclusive site for infectious disease research, we're leading the search for new antimicrobials by utilizing powerful new technologies, including rapid sequencing of microbial genomes and gene identification in pathogenic microbes. When coupled with molecular biology, we can quickly identify the potential drug targets of a microorganism. We are applying these advances to our pursuit of new classes of antimicrobials that hold promise in combating the growing occurrence of drug-resistant bacterial organisms. Our scientists specializing in hospital-based infections are working collaboratively with their counterparts in Bangalore, India, who are striving to discover treatments for tuberculosis.
