At AstraZeneca, we are diligently working to improve patient care through better medication adherence, while recognizing
the important role lifestyle, diet, and exercise can play. AstraZeneca is committed to appropriate care by:
Forging partnerships with the medical community, other healthcare partners,
and patient advocacy organizations to find effective solutions that will improve
patient care. We collaborate with key academic institutions on research to identify
and implement methods to improve the care of patients.
Collaboration enables us to better address the problem of lack of medication adherence.
Supporting patient - doctor dialogue by encouraging healthcare professionals
to explore the complex reasons why patients do not take their medications as prescribed. We
want to empower healthcare professionals to have open discussions with their patients about
medication, therapy, and aspects of managing their health. Patients need to understand how
to take their medicine. Patients also need to understand what the potential side effects might
be, and how to tell if treatment is working. Through our efforts, we hope to support and
improve the patient - doctor dialogue so that people can get the best benefit from their
treatment.
Designing Tailored Interactive Patient Solutions (TIPS) that provide patients
with clinical and behavioral change strategies that motivate them to take an active role in
the management of their prescribed treatment regimen. One TIPS program, developed by the
Managed Markets team at AstraZeneca, also helps patients improve their medication-taking
behavior and adopt healthy lifestyles. The goal of these technology-driven interactive
patient solutions is to improve patient care.
AstraZeneca acknowledges that adherence is a challenge—for the patient, the physician and other
healthcare professionals, the caregiver, the healthcare system, and society at large. However,
with increased awareness and understanding of the issue and improved healthcare technology, along
with a concerted effort across the entire system, we believe that greater strides will be made to
improve medication adherence.
